Study Report Food Loss and Waste Regional: West Java, Central Java, and Bali (Available in English Only)

The "Food Loss and Waste Regional Study Report" focuses on West Java, Central Java, and Bali, examining the significant impact of food loss and waste (FLW) on the environment, economy, and food security in Indonesia. The study shows that Indonesia generates 115-184 kg of FLW per capita each year, with major contributions from households, restaurants, and markets. Consumption waste is notably high in West Java and Central Java, while production losses dominate in Bali, driven by fruit spoilage and cultural practices. Current management strategies in these provinces mainly involve composting and Black Soldier Fly cultivation, with limited waste segregation practices.

The methodology combines secondary data sources like Food Balance Sheets and primary data through waste sampling to analyze FLW across the five stages of the food supply chain. The report recommends drafting specific regulations to reduce FLW, enhancing infrastructure for waste management, and promoting behavior change campaigns. It calls for integrating FLW reduction strategies into regional low-carbon development plans to align with national goals for greenhouse gas emissions reduction, as outlined in Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The findings aim to support data-driven policies for sustainable development and a circular economy transition.
