ILO Conducted Tripartite Workshop as part of the “Policy Readiness Assessment on Green Jobs and Just Transition in the Energy Sector in Indonesia”
The International Labour Organization (ILO) as part of the Partnership for Action on Green (Economy) PAGE Indonesia has conducted a tripartite consultation workshop (virtual) as part of the ongoing “Policy Readiness Assessment on Green Jobs and Just Transition in the Energy Sector”, on Tuesday, 28 June 2022.
This tripartite consultation workshop, which includes plenary and breakout sessions, was attended by the ILO’s tripartite partners i.e. the government, employers associations/private sector, and labor unions as the three constituents of the ILO.
The objectives of the “Policy Readiness Assessment on Green Jobs and Just Transition in the Energy Sector” are set to provide a snapshot of green jobs and just transition policy frameworks and activities at a macro level, review the readiness at the national level, and analyze green jobs and just transitions readiness in the energy sector in Indonesia.
“These economic transformations will trigger structural changes that will affect the world of work. Although the transition may impose a risk of jobs loss in certain sectors, when managed well, a transition into a greener economy opens opportunities for creating more green jobs,” said Dr. Medrilzam, Director of Environmental Affairs, Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS).
The tripartite workshop was opened by Ms. Michiko Miyamoto, the ILO Indonesia Country Director. Speakers include (1) Dr. Cristina Martinez, Senior Specialist on Environment and Decent Work ILO ROAP and Asia-Pacific Coordinator for Green Jobs, Just Transition, and the Climate Action 4 Jobs Initiative, (2) Dr. Medrilzam, Director of Environmental Affairs of BAPPENAS, (3) Mr. M. Arif Hidayat, Head of Cooperation of the Ministry of Manpower, (4) Mrs. Maria Emeninta, Coordinator for Labour Union Coalition on Climate Change and Just Transition Issues, (5) Mr. Paul Butar-Butar, Member of Renewable Energy Committees of APINDO, (6) Dr. Samantha Sharpe, Research Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures University of Technology Sydney, (7) Ms. Laily Prihatiningtyas, Consultant for Green Jobs and Just Transition, ILO.
“Policy Readiness Assessment for Green Jobs and Just Transition in the Energy Sector” is part of the ILO's program under PAGE Indonesia. The process of the study includes desk analysis, consultation with stakeholders, identification and analysis of activities and policies, and analysis of existing policy coherence.
Through the Tripartite workshop, the interim results were consulted and validated, and further context was discussed, including identification of the current state, opportunity, challenges, and a priority area for future activities necessary to ensure a just transition process, especially in the energy sector.
