
Catalysing Sustainable Change: Mainstreaming Circular Economy in the Entire Value Chain of Indonesia's Food & Beverage Sector
PAGE Indonesia - In collaboration with the Ministry of National Development Planning/BAPPENAS, PAGE Indonesia organized a two-day workshop titled 'Mainstreaming Circular Economy in the Entire Value Chain of Food & Beverage Sector'. Held both in Bogor, West Java and online (hybrid) on 24-25 August 2023, the event aimed, among others, to promote medium and long-term green recovery through Circular Economy (CE) principles. The workshop, featuring panel sessions and focused discussions, presented findings from PAGE Indonesia's circular economy assessments within the industry.
Dignitaries including Mr. Angus Mackay from UNITAR, Ms. Henriette Faergemann from the EU Delegation to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, Dr. Aretha Aprilia from UNDP Indonesia, and Dr. Medrilzam from BAPPENAS inaugurated the workshop. The workshop was divided into four sessions covering topics like the state of Circular Economy policies in Indonesia and mainstreaming CE practices within the food and beverage sector.
Representatives from diverse governmental bodies, associations, CSOs, academia, and businesses participated, with offline attendees hailing from key organizations. The online sessions expanded the engagement to over 250 participants for all four sessions. Among the offline attendees were representatives, ranging from directors to technical experts, from various governmental bodies such as the Ministry of National Development Planning/BAPPENAS and LCDI Secretariat, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Drug National Authority (BPOM), the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD), Indonesia Postharvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition/Jejaring Pasca Panen untuk Gizi Indonesia, Surplus Indonesia, Indonesian Hotel & Restaurant Association (PHRI), Indonesia Food and Beverages Business Association (GAPMMI), Indonesian Consumers Protection Foundation (YLKI), Indofood, Magalarva, Burgreen, Great Giant Foods, DANONE Indonesia, Indonesia Plastic Bag Diet Movement (GIDKP), University of Indonesia, Garda Pangan, and Food Bank of Indonesia Foundation.
The workshop achieved several objectives: it raised awareness about the circular economy's importance, facilitated dialogue among key stakeholders, advocated for circular practices, identified actionable steps for input of the ongoing national circular economy roadmap development, and promoted relevant courses on circular economy.
The event fostered comprehensive discussions, involving a diverse range of stakeholders, and played a pivotal role in promoting sustainable economic practices and future strategies towards a circular economy.
