Public Policy Dialogue Report: Electric Vehicles to Accelerate Green Economic Transformation (Available in English Only)

The Public Policy Dialogue on “Electric Vehicles to Accelerate Green Economic Transformation,” held in Jakarta on 20 February 2025, highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to energy transition and its ambition to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or earlier. The discussions underscored the potential of electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce fossil fuel dependency, boost new industries, and generate millions of green jobs. At the same time, challenges such as high costs, limited charging infrastructure, and workforce readiness remain. Panelists from government, international organizations, academia, and the private sector shared perspectives on the economic, social, and environmental impacts of EV adoption, emphasizing the importance of circular economy approaches, policy harmonization, and inclusive workforce development.

Key recommendations include setting clear direction on battery technologies, strengthening EV infrastructure across regions, and implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for sustainable battery recycling. Policies should also incentivize hybrid vehicles as a transition pathway, promote domestic innovation, and ensure training opportunities for vulnerable groups to participate in green jobs. International collaboration, harmonized regulations, and financing mechanisms are essential to ensure Indonesia’s EV transition is inclusive, sustainable, and globally competitive.
