The Ministry of Tourism Partners with the ILO to Promote the Green Transition in Tourism for MSMEs in Indonesia
The Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the ILO, support the Indonesian government's efforts to transition toward a greener, circular, resilient, inclusive and job-rich economy.
Yogyakarta, Indonesia - The Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), has committed to advancing the green tourism transition for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as tourist villages throughout Indonesia.
In a statement delivered in Jakarta on 1 July 2025, Assistant Deputy for Community Capacity Building at the Ministry of Tourism, Ika Kusuma Permana Sari, announced that the Ministry and the ILO are driving this initiative through a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme held in Yogyakarta from 16 to 22 June 2025.
A total of 22 tourism professionals participated in the training, all of whom actively conduct training programmes in their respective regions to support the development of sustainable and eco-friendly tourism. The sessions covered a range of topics including approaches to building environmentally conscious tourism enterprises, financial management for tourism-focused MSMEs and the application of green business practices.
"This ToT programme is expected to support the Indonesian government's efforts to transition toward a greener, circular, resilient, inclusive, and job-rich economy," said Ika.
Out of the 22 participants, 12 master trainers will be selected to deliver training to MSME operators in the Borobudur–Yogyakarta–Prambanan strategic area, where they will serve as grassroots catalysts for change.
"These master trainers are expected to reach and assist around 100 MSMEs across several supported villages in the region, spanning various types of tourism-related enterprises such as accommodations, culinary businesses, crafts, tour packages, waste processing and more," she added.
Ika noted that this collaboration is anticipated to help build, expand, and strengthen an entrepreneurial ecosystem that embraces and understands the significance of environmentally friendly tourism.
"Through extensive capacity-building efforts, this initiative aims to equip selected tourism practitioners to serve as master trainers, ensuring the adoption of sustainable green business practices to strengthen MSMEs in the tourism sector," said Ika.
The ToT marks the third consecutive year of collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and the ILO under the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) Project in Indonesia. Since 2023, a series of training programmes—including ToT and Training of Beneficiaries (ToB)—have been carried out in Manado and Yogyakarta.
Dina Novita Sari, Programme Officer at the ILO, emphasized that this training aligns with the mission of ILO-PAGE Indonesia, which seeks to integrate the green economy into national strategies while fostering quality employment opportunities within the tourism industry. “With green tourism certification for MSMEs, we are confident that the positive effects of this programme will extend widely across Indonesia and contribute to the country's goals for a green economy and sustainable tourism,” said Dina.
